January 30, 2009

Dear BerkShares Businesses,

In the past week three new initiatives that will help expand and strengthen
the BerkShares program were put into place.

The first was an initial meeting with three Project Sprout representatives
to discuss how to involve students and young people in using BerkShares as
an exciting and unique economic sustainability tool. Project Sprout is the
group of Monument Mountain Regional High School students who started their
own community garden and who anticipate supplementing school lunches with
healthy, locally grown food. You’ll be reading a great deal about this
collaboration in the coming months.

The second was the beginning of an aggressive northward expansion of the
BerkShares program into the central part of the County. Partly funded by a
grant from the Berkshire Bank Foundation, this northward expansion was
introduced to an enthusiastic mix of business owners and citizens at Brix
Wine Bar in Pittsfield on Monday, January 26th. There will be much more to
follow on this move in the next couple of months. Watch for exciting news
about the first weekend in May.

And finally, Wednesday, January 28th marked the first in a series of monthly
radio shows on WSBS in Great Barrington. The show, called “Local Biz”, is
co-hosted by executive director Sharon Palma and board member and long-time
participant Steffen Root, co-owner of Berkshire Bike & Board in Great
Barrington. Their first guest was Tom Levin, owner of Tom’s Toys, also in
Great Barrington. The show will air the last Wednesday of the month at 9 am
on WSBS AM-860.

Stay tuned for more exciting news in the weeks and months to come.
BerkShares are YOUR tool to help your business and our local economy
flourish, and your suggestions and comments are always welcome. Below you’ll
find this week’s featured BerkShares Specials along with a list of
businesses that have recently signed up to accept BerkShares.

Best wishes,

Sharon Palma for the BerkShares Team
